Expo Work: Mickey Mouse

For this picture I am not sure if the plan is to use the steamboat willy background or use the background featured in the distance behind Mickey

If it is decided that we will use the full steamboat willy foreground, i will finish the image off with the life ring and stearing wheel that is shown in the animation.

About the finished sting

Instead of uploading each part of the complete sting with their hands and heads updated to the animation, I decided to skip ahead and upload the finished sting which includes backgrounds and sound. unfortunately, due to the fact that I chose to composite the sting in a PC programme called 'Adobe Premiere Pro' a programme that I am unfamiliar with, instead of the Mac programme 'Final Cut Pro' there is a boarder that has appeared around the video, all attempts at removing this have resulted in a lower image quality in the sting. The revised ending to the sting also features more 'plank-like' pieces of wood appearing instead of the splinter of wood that appeared originally, this is due to limitations with 'Toon Boom'. Stan is also featured wearing cat-burglars mask due to the fact that it is less obvious he is a criminal with the lack of Dave (The police officer) in the sting. The backgrounds have gone through 3 different stages of creation since the project began, originally planned to be constructed in 3D 'Maya' I decided to use ‘Photoshop’ to edit scanned images due to my lack of knowledge on texturing and animating in the programme, this later proved more trouble than originally planned when my copy of 'Toon Boom' met constant errors when introduced to my scanned images. After finally managing to successfully import the first background without Toon Boom crashing, the time I had set out had elapsed leaving me with only one choice, to drawing in the backgrounds using Toon Boom, which I found I liked the finished effect more than the previous methods.

Sting Part 2 (finished without background)

This video shows what the second part of the sting would look like when it was finished (without backgrounds). This video has heads and hands updated to where they should be in the animation.

Full Sting (rough)

This is the full video showing the first half of the sting, it was at this point it was brought to my attention that the sting lasts over 10 seconds, 14 to be exact, which 3 seconds over the aloud limit, using rough calculations the second half would have added another 5 to 6 seconds to the sting, which is far too long for a sting so I made the decision to drop that half of the sting

Sting Part 5 (original rough)

This video is of the moment where Stan is made to look like the Lincoln University 'minerva' logo

Sting Part 4 (rough)

This video is the scene where Stan trips over while not looking where he's going

Sting Part 3 (rough)

This video is the front view of Stan running down the alleyway; there are arms and heads missing because I just wanted to get the motion right before I spent time drawing them in

Sting Part 2 (rough)

This video shows Stan as he has just entered the alleyway, I decided to give him a second to pause for a rest, to give the impression that he has been running for a long time

Sting Part 1 (rough)

This is a video of the first part of the sting, showing Stan running from the side up until he reaches the corner of the alleyway

Finished Storyboard page 10

19 -

20 the shadow that had loomed over Stan is revealed to be a dwarf with a thumb shaped like a police baton and a hat with a siren on...

Finished Storyboard page 9

17 Stan gradually starts to cower in terror as the shadow slowly passes across him.

18 In this frame I had planned on creating some kind of puddle or wet patch on Stan to show extreme fear, of course at this point I know why I didn't, but we will get to that later on

Finished Storyboard page 8

15 long shot of Stan running into a dead end, the camera angle does not change after this point.

16 The shadow of the police officer, lets call him Dave, gradually passes over Stan.

Finished Storyboard page 7

13 -

14 these all kind of speak for themselves.

Finished Storyboard page 6

11 Stan comes back to his sences and remembers why he is running.

Finished Storyboard page 5

9 We then have a mid-long shot of Stan as he skids across the floor into a conveniently placed set of boxes and bins.

10 A mid-close up then reveals Stan wearing the dispose from the bins to create a likeness to the Lincoln university 'Minerva' logo

Finished Storyboard page 4

7 The camera then reverts back to the shot seen at the beginning of the sting.

8 Except this time Stan falls down while not looking where he is going.

Finished Storyboard page 3

5 The Shadow then looms near the wall closest to Stan.

6 A mid shot of Stan from the front running frantically away from the distant shadow.

Finished Storyboard page 2

3 As the criminal, it this point I'm sick of typing criminal so we will call him Stan, steps out of shot the police officers shadow looms across the wall in the background, this is to reveal what 'Stan' is running from.

4 The camera then moves to reveal 'Stan' stood against the wall to which he runs out of shot again.

Finished Storyboard Page 1

1.The sting begins with a mid shot of the criminal running while looking behind himself with a fearful look

2. After turning off down an alleyway the criminal checks behind himself and hears a noise

Character B

This was the finished look of the criminal character, in which I wanted to have him with a fearful expression on his face throughout the sting. This is

to show the viewer that he was being chased by something he fears, to tell the viewer that this man is a criminal I decided to use a fairly stereotypical striped prison shirt. It was later decided that he should also be wearing a cat-burglar mask to further enforce the idea that he is a criminal.

Character A

After writing out the story i set about drawing out what i wanted the characters to look like, this was the original design for the police officer character with the shape of this shadow that would pass along the walls

Finished storyboard page 11

21 cut to an extreme close up of Stan's face with a high pitched womanly scream

22 cuts back to original angle to show Stan run into a wall in terror while Dave runs toward the camera screaming and flailing his arms

My Sting

The Original plan for my sting has changed so many times its hard to keep track, originally consisting of an elephant, batman and lots of other wild ideas thrown together my first idea was a simple chase, after a long conversation with Anna, from the original groups we were put in, the idea eventually did a loop and just stuck to a simple chase between a police officer and a criminal

Initial Story/idea

The direction of the chase consisting of a police officer and a criminal which would take the viewer seeing only the things the criminal sees with the police officer only being a looming presence/shadow that Persue him through the ally-ways in a city at night. The original idea had the giant shadow of a huge police force turn out to be a small unassuming officer at the end. this changed after the first showing with the rest of the year group which lead to various suggestions given on how to change the sting to have a funnier ending, i took note of all of these and set about planning how to incorporate them all into the sting.
